Assessing and Defining the Artist’s Artwork
As an artist who would like to market your artwork successfully, you must objectively define your style, your techniques and the formal aspects of your art, such as light, color, and composition etc. As the artist, what are you trying to express in your art? Evaluate your current Artist Statement and see if it truly represents clearly what you produce in your art. In other words, does your art translate to what you would like to express to the viewer? If your art does accomplish this, then that is great and if does not, why? If you have difficulty with this exercise, then ask someone who you respect for their knowledgeable about art to help you. This is usually a difficult exercise for the artist to undertake, as it is normally difficult for an artist to be objective with their art and what they want others to see in their art. Have a trusted friend or advisor help you in this endeavor.
I believe that for most people, the purchase of art is a personal, emotional and subjective decision. The buyer needs to be able to justify their purchase and like it or not, the artist is an integral part of this process. The artist, either directly or indirectly needs to position and market their art to the public, much like any other product or commodity. With this understanding the artist needs to realistically assess their art, whether it is saleable and who, at this point, may like their art.
